The expansion to the west of nomadic horsemen, such as the Avars and Mongols, repeatedly threatened Europe's cultures critically.
Thus, the question arises: Was there an influence of rider-nomadic cultures on rule, society and culture in the Frankish Empire, or in the Holy Roman Empire?

Archaeological sources show a direct influence of nomadic technology on the development of the pan-European nobility.
The prerequisites necessary for the Franconian-German equestrian nobility came to Europe only in the context of cultural contact with the Awaren.

Contrary to the usual cliché of the Mongolian's lack of influence, in this study Ortwin Köhler shows that the influence of the Mongols on European society
is clearly noticeable - but not on the nobility, but on the emerging citizenship. The influence of Asian armament - especially crossbow and halberd -
gave the foot fighter an increasingly important role and eventually led to the emergence of early modern infantry armies.

The steppe cultures also contributed to warfare as the "art" of the war, making tactics and strategy in the first place an important element of European warfare.
